How to mold and choose rubber gaskets and seals for Pump and Valve Industry? ( Air Pumps, Electromagnetic Valve)
Nov 26,2018 | Industry News

Rubber gaskets and seals are one of the keys to pump sealing since they are often required exceptional chemical and thermal resistance for a wide range of temperatures.  Common rubber gasket seal materials: EPDM, nitrile rubber, silicone rubber and fluoro rubber, which have different properties and uses. How to choose the right custom rubber seals material is one of the keys to ensure product quality. Let's first describe the performance of each material.

EPDM rubber is  well known for its excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight, heat and aging. and it also has excellent resistance to water, steam, alkalis, acids and oxidants. but It is not recommended for resistance to oil, gasoline, and hydrocarbon solvents. EPDM is ability to stabilize color and resist harsh weather conditions makes it ideal choice for outdoor rubber gasket seal applications at low temperatures. It is also sulfur and peroxide curable. EPDM can withstand temperatures spanning from -40°F to 250°F, intermittent to +275°F.

Nitrile rubber (NBR) has very good oil and gasoline resistance, permeability, and heat abrasion resistance. Its resistance to alkalis and acids all increase as the nitrile content of the compound increases. Nitrile must be specially compounded for resistance to ozone, sunlight, and natural aging. It has poor resistance to oxygenated solvents. Nitrile is superior to neoprene in oils and solvent resistance, but is not recommended for custom rubber seal applications where it is exposed to severe weathering.Due to good resilience, nitrile is used in applications requiring resistance to extreme hot and cold temperatures, abrasion, water, and gas permeability. Nitrile rubber gasket and seal works well in temperatures ranging from -40°F to +212°F, intermittent to +230°F.

Silicone rubber (SIR) is a elastomer with outstanding tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, and compression setexceptional resistance to temperatures, UV and ozone, extremely resilient to mechanical fatigue. and the low temperature flexibility of silicone is unmatched by any other elastomer. Silicone molded or die cut rubber gaskets are often used in many industries due to their excellent resistance to chemical, water, fire, fungal growth, ozone, heat and aging, like gasket and seal, heat shields, fire stops, seals, cushions, and insulation.

Fluro rubber (Fluorocarbon/Viton/FKM) is has been used in many other industries, including the automotive, oil, fluid power, appliance and chemical industries due to it as a high performance rubber compound known for its outstanding resistance to extreme heat, aggressive fuels, chemicals, oils and concentrated acids. Viton Fkm rubber gasket and seal also exhibits excellent resistance to atmospheric oxidation, sun, weather, and fungus and mold. Another advantage of Viton rubber gasket is its resistance to compression set even at temperatures that would alter other elastomers. The working temperature of viton rubber could be ranging from -15°F to +400°F, intermittent to +500°F.
